Chicago Charters and Vacant School Buildings

Many of Chicago’s public charter schools are blocks away from vacant buildings owned by Chicago Public Schools. The district promised it would not allow charter schools to move into any of the schools closed during the historic school closings of 2013. It was a move to ease concerns about privatization.

But in many cases, taxpayers are paying extra to charters that are renting on the private market, while also footing the bill to maintain buildings the city already owns.
